semi-annual update [Feb. 25th, 2008|07:00 am]
Hello all! Every once in awhile I remember that I have this page and decide to update it. Here's what's new, since we last spoke --

1) I've decided I'm not going to stick with my career for the rest of my life. What can I say -- I have ADHD, and I feel I can't spend the next 26 years of my career being underutilized. I took my GMATs in January (successfully, thank goodness). I'm applying to grad schools now, and hopefully I'll begin a Masters of Finance program in the fall. Then I'm going to go work for an investment bank or something, which was really my original intention when I went to undergrad.

2) Steve and I are finally going to renovate our kitchen. It'll just be nice to have cabinets that don't look like I put them together myself from cardboard and hot glue.

3) I've had a sort of mini-reunion with a lot of my cousins and, I've got to say, it's shocking how similar we are. We hadn't seen each other for over 10 years and yet we share a lot of traits. So much for nature vs. nuture.

4) I'm running a marathon in Nashville in April. I am super-excited -- I've never been to Tennessee! I should probably get in touch with Audra while I'm there. Audra -- you reading this? We should do lunch! You can meet Steve and we can do about 12 years of catching up. Anyway, this race will make it 4 states and 5 marathons total. Only 46 more to go. At this rate, I'll finish when I'm 85.

5) We got the most awesome TV ever. It's about the size of one of our living room walls, although our living room is pretty small, so that's not saying much. It makes me sit slack-jawed and drooling.

6) University of Maryland basketball still frustrates me to no end. Beat number 1 Carolina, then lay several eggs at the end of the season. Sigh.

7) I'm trying to revamp my resume, and it's not fun. I've basically forgotten how to do a proper resume (we have internal resumes at work that are completely different from real-world resumes). How do you write a proper resume for the corporate world that says "I can't tell you anything about my old job, but, damn, I was good at it?" Yeah, I give up.

8) If one more person dings one of my doors in a parking lot, I'm going to go postal.

9) One of my best friends is getting married in March and I get to dress up and participate. Congratulations, Kate!

As usual, it's time for me to stop procrastinating and go to work. Happy February, everyone!

worst blogger ever [Oct. 3rd, 2007|07:47 am]
[Tags|]
[mood | groggy]

So -- recent developments, since I am a horrible blogger and fairly bad at keeping everyone up to date:

1) On Sunday Steve and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary. He's still an awesome husband and we have a pretty happy little life. It was wonderful, although I was actually surprised at how quickly it happened. I am terrified at how quickly a year went by without me even noticing. I think we're in some sort of space time warp. Before you know it, I'm going to have gray hair (under all the hair dye, of course) and wrinkles and I'll be spending all of my money sending the kids to college. Eek!

2) Went on vacation with the coolest group of vacationers ever. First time I've been on a group vacation where I didn't want to kill one or all of my companions.

3) My fantasy football team is screwed and it's only the 4th week.

4) I've become a fairly adept knitter of scarves and baby sweaters and I am now in the process of making myself this little cutie: http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTtempting.html.
It's my first time making an adult size sweater so I hope it doesn't look stupid. I'm wearing it anyway if it does.

5) Everyone under the sun is having babies. I went on a trip for work, and when I came back, lo and behold, one of my old friends had reproduced, that sneaky girl. My sister-in-law is due this fall (and she's my age, so now, of course, all eyes turn to me). I had a cousin who got married a week before me, and another one a week after me. Both of those cousins are due this fall. I will not be joining those cousins on the baby train just yet, so quit asking. ;) Give me at least 3 years.

6) Ravens never fail to disappoint with their crazy inconsistently. I'm going to go bald from ripping my hair out.

7) Yankees are in the playoffs on the wild-card and I hope we do to Boston what they did to us in 2004.

8) I went to Gap Outlet at Arundel Mills yesterday and spent $21 dollars. I got two sweaters, 4 tank tops, and a baby onesie (a gift). I felt so thrifty.

9) I'm procrastinating at the moment because I don't feel like going to work.

Procrastination aside, I should probably leave. I'll try to stop being such a slacker, but I make no promises.

Here's to a happy holiday season for everyone :)

I love these kind of discoveries [Oct. 22nd, 2006|07:45 pm]
Steve and I got new appliances. We're planning on getting new cabinets next year, but until then, our kitchen is going to look pretty ghetto. When we replaced our range hood, which is slightly smaller than the old one, we discovered that our kitchen (which always had a horrible looking paint job) was actually WALLPAPERED. The dumbasses painted over wallpaper. The people who owned this house before us should be shot. That is all I have to say.

;)

so this is married life [Oct. 15th, 2006|09:12 pm]
It's not very different from single life. Part is that is because Steve and I had such a good relationship before, so not much changed.

The things that have changed since the wedding? I don't have to tie ribbons on things anymore. I have a lot of crap to put away. I think I'm responsible for cleaning this house. Unfun stuff like that. Boooo.

it's times like this [Sep. 28th, 2006|01:31 am]
[mood | sleepy]
[music |Beatles "I'm So Tired"]

that I hate ribbon. damn my creative streak.

and i want to burn my apartment down, because there's no way i'm getting that whole place cleaned by tomorrow. i'm just sayin'.

i'm tired. is it sunday yet? where's my mojito and my hubby?

wow, 6 days [Sep. 24th, 2006|01:48 am]
So I'm getting hitched to the most awesome guy in the world. I feel like I should be nervous, because everyone's asking me if I'm nervous, but I'm really not. I'm pretty happy about it. :)

you know you're a redneck when... [Jul. 9th, 2006|09:16 am]
your toilet, vanity, and bathtub are out on the back deck. the cycle will be complete if we put them in the front yard and fill them with flowers.

luckily, we've installed a new bathtub and vanity. the toilet will be installed as soon as we get the new flooring down. thank goodness for our cool home repair friends ... we've done an impressive amount of repairs for a lot less than it usually costs!

another random update [May. 8th, 2006|09:57 pm]
[mood | creative]

Well, let's see....lots going on here! Steve and I joined the adult world (not porn, you goofball) and bought a house. It's an adorable townhouse with a cool deck and a wet bar in the basement! :) The unfortunate side effect of all of this is that it seems that Home Depot owns us now. ;) I've also become a master painter!

i am the worst blogger ever [Mar. 25th, 2006|07:10 am]
[mood | hopeful]
[music |Stevie Wonder "Superstition"]

but that's ok. I'm not trying to update the entire web, just my friends. You guys don't really care that I had a powerbar and a glass of water before I ran, and that I got a hole in my sock, do you? I didn't think so.

Wedding planning is going well. I've completely revamped the floral picture in my mind; the florist is probably going to hate me, but I don't particularly mind that because she's a little overpriced anyway. I'm going with lavender calla lilies right now. They're called lavender, but they're really the shade of purple that everything else I'm having is going to be.

Also going well (relatively) is the home search. While everything in this area is obscenely expensive for no real reason (and I can't see how anyone here can afford it), we are in the market for a few decent townhomes and will probably buy within the next week. That's simultaneously exciting and terrifying. It's pretty exciting to be buying a nice newish house with my wonderful fiance. It's pretty terrifying to be strapped down to that sort of financial commitment (i.e. considerably higher rent for the foreseeable future). That said, equity is king.

Life is good. :)

To appease you guys.... [Feb. 18th, 2006|04:20 pm]
I know I'm the worst blogger ever, and I update very infrequently. For those of you who are clamoring for wedding details (Sarah ;) ), here's a small smattering of links and stuff. I'm not putting up the wedding dress link because I don't want Steve to see it, but everything else is fair game. (if you want to see the dress, ask LeeAnn or something).

The church: http://www.staugustinechurch.org/

Reception hall: http://www.puttingontheritz.com/the_gathering_place.html

Bridesmaids' dresses: www.billlevkoff.com, search for style #223 in Euro Eggplant

Photographer: Heather! :)

Steve and I went for tasting with the caterers on Thursday and stuffed ourself silly. Because of the eclectic tastes (and large appetites) or our friends, we'll be doing a buffet. Because our friends are also drinkers, there will be an open bar. You're welcome. ;)

Props to LeeAnn [Jan. 28th, 2006|05:45 pm]
[mood | giddy]

for being the most well prepared MOH ever. Blame it on the fact that she's been involved in a few weddings, or maybe that she works in the event planning industry, but girl had her stuff down! The organized folder of details was impressive.

We had so much fun today! Both Natalie and LeeAnn tried on many pretty dresses, and found one that just perfect. Deep eggplant color, pretty little bows in the middle, just precious. Then we went to Bennigan's and ate some yummy lunch while LeeAnn impressed us with her attention to detail. Seriously, girl, you rock! :)

I GOT MY DRESS! [Jan. 23rd, 2006|09:00 pm]
[mood | excited]

It's so beautiful, I can't even express it. It's very close to the dress I originally wanted (the one that cost $2200!). Luckily, this dress was nowhere near $2200. I can't justify that cost on a dress I'll wear for a total of 7 or 8 hours. Anyway --- it's the perfect dress, and the six I tried on in the store actually fit me! Herein lies the rub -- my goal is to NOT lose any weight before the wedding. If I do, I have to get the dress altered, and I'm too lazy for that. This is easier said that done when training for multiple marathons and running 40 miles a week. I guess I'm going to have to start eating more chocolate. Mmmmm. :)

Cute dresses for my bridesmaids too, in the nicest eggplant/plum color. I'm so excited, I don't want to wait 8 months!

i am not stressed, so don't tell me i should be [Jan. 9th, 2006|05:37 pm]
[mood | mellow]

Seriously, this is one thing that is driving me insane. I think Steve and I have done a pretty good job about keeping this wedding thing relatively stress-free. We've gotten the church, reception hall, and caterer, which I think is a pretty big portion of the entire thing. Everyone we talk to (mostly well-meaning friends and in-laws and friends of in-laws) are trying to instill us with the sense of urgency that we just don't have. Seriously, we're getting married in 8.5 months, chill out. If I hear one more rushed "Did you do this? Did you do this? Well you have to do this...this is so stressful..." from someone who isn't involved in the wedding I'm going to snap and haul off on them. I guess it's just that I'm not going to go crazy about any of this stuff. I mean, come on, Steve and I are the ones getting hitched here, and we're not freaking out. Calm down, people. ;)

I've been wedding dress shopping lately, and I've determined that I have expensive taste. I went to Betsy Robinson's Bridal and found THE DRESS. Unfortunately, said dress costs more than I put down for my car when I bought it. Then I tried David's Bridal. Maybe this is because I went to the crappy one in Glen Burnie (can you say ghetto?), but boy were those dresses crappy. They weren't anything like the ones I saw on the site. Maybe I'll try a different David's (like in Rockville), because Glen Burnie sketches me out.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!! [Jan. 1st, 2006|05:05 pm]
[mood | hopeful]
[music |Auld Lang Syne]

All in all, 2004 was an amazingly craptistic year, and 2005 got on the road to making up for it. Here's to 2006 being 10 times better!

Resolutions for the new year:

1) Keep working out; there's no way I'm going to buy a wedding dress and then pudge out so I have to get it re-altered.
2) Save more -- walk the fine line between wedding spending and debt.
3) Find out where I'm gonna live.
4) Appreciate the good things I've got (love you, Steve!).

Happy New Year! :)

Merry Christmas [Dec. 28th, 2005|07:37 am]
[mood | chipper]
[music |Viva Las Vegas]

Things I learned over Christmas in Vegas:

1) The house always wins.
2) I can singlehandedly change the fate of NFL teams. All I have to do is bet on them.
3) Steve and I are capable of downing a lot of Guinness. (we played video poker...and as long as we kept playing, they kept giving them for free!)
4) Steve's dad's luck is unparalleled.
5) Christmas in Vegas -- much more crowded than we expected.
6) Everything is much farther apart than it looks. A walk to that "hotel over there" will take you over 30 minutes.
7) 3 days is enough if you're not a compulsive gambler.

(no subject) [Dec. 10th, 2005|04:19 pm]
[mood | busy]

I don't know why people get all stressed-out and crazy over this entire wedding-planning thing. It's actually kind of fun. I mean, I guess if you're one of those people who won't be able to handle it if you get ivory napkins instead of white linen, it could be stressful. Seriously though, who cares? I just want things to be pretty and happy.

I've been going through a ton of wedding magazines and the only source of even a bit of worry is trying to find dresses that I think everyone will like. Of course, in my infinite wisdom, I chose a wedding party of assorted heights and builds, so that no one dress would be ideal for all of them. I think I may just pick a color and a group of dresses and let each girl pick the one that fits her best. We'll see. I kind of like plum, which would look so good with an ivory dress. What kind of flowers go with plum? As far as I can tell, all of my bridesmaids should look good in plum.

I've been shopping for dresses for me, but I won't be posting a thing about my opinions here, since Steve may end up reading. He doesn't get to know what it looks like until next September. :)

I'm getting hitched!!!! :) [Dec. 6th, 2005|04:19 pm]

There was no better way to announce it. A wonderful trip to Niagara Falls, a gorgeous proposal by the beautifully lit falls, and a dazzling custom-made platinum and diamond ring. I am truly a lucky girl. :)

yeah, yeah, I know it's been awhile [Nov. 11th, 2005|04:57 pm]

[music |Franz Ferdinand "The Outsiders"]

Life has been so wonderful I can barely even express it. :) I've been ridiculously busy, but happy. I'm back into running after getting a horrible shin splint during the Baltimore Marathon. (I got a PR for the race, though!) My roommate is back. My boyfriend is wonderful. Oh, and I'm going to VEGAS next month! :)

[mood | bouncy]
[music |Coldplay "White Shadows"]

In 12 days, life will come together as it should. It's been a very odd year....but I think things are going to end very well. Sometimes you need to do a few idiotic things to realize where you belong. Here's to our shared idiocies, baby. :)
